Zusman Hospice, OSU Wexner Medical Center Form Partnership

1/14/2014

Wexner Heritage Village and The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center Ross Heart Hospital have established a groundbreaking new partnership that, for the first time, gives patients too sick to leave the hospital access to services offered by Zusman Hospice.

Under the agreement, Zusman Hospice staff will care for patients and their families in two private rooms on the sixth floor of the state-of-the-art Ross Heart Hospital. If a patient chooses to leave the hospital and return home, Zusman Hospice may continue to provide services. Zusman Hospice is a component of Wexner Heritage Village’s comprehensive senior housing and healthcare services. Hospice care provides comfort and support for individuals with life-limiting illnesses and their families, with a focus on symptom relief rather than treatment. The Zusman Hospice team of certified and trained physicians, registered nurses, social workers, chaplains, state-tested nursing assistants, and volunteers provides patients with a comprehensive approach to expert medical care, pain management, and emotional and spiritual support.

In addition to caring for patients wherever they live, Zusman Hospice operates a unique in-patient unit, Zusman House, on the Bexley area campus of Wexner Heritage Village. This new partnership means Ross Heart Hospital patients needing that in-patient level of hospice care will no longer have to experience a potentially risky and painful move.

“We are honored to have the opportunity to bring the knowledge and expertise the Zusman Hospice team has honed over the years to more of the Central Ohio community,” Wexner Heritage Village President and CEO David Rosen said. “And there is no better partner for this endeavor than the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. We share the deeply rooted belief that our patients deserve the highest quality care, respect and dignity throughout their lives, and particularly at the end of life.”

“This partnership with Zusman Hospice allows us to provide an essential service to patients and their loved ones,” said Dr. Steven Gabbe, CEO of The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center. “Giving patients and families peace and comfort at one of the most stressful and trying times is another part of providing the very best medical care possible.”
