The Cottage Offers Personalized Care for Individuals with Alzheimer’s and Dementia

Staff of Certified Dementia Practitioners and home-like atmosphere carry on Wexner Heritage Village’s tradition of exceptional care

COLUMBUS, OHIO – Wexner Heritage Village (WHV) is pleased to announce the opening of The Cottage, a new memory-support assisted living residence, specially designed for individuals with Alzheimer’s and dementia. The Cottage will host an open house on Thursday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m.

“Opening The Cottage is a prime example of our commitment to enhancing the well-being of seniors in our community,” said WHV President/CEO David T. Rosen. “This new residence – and new approach to caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s and dementia – carries with it the organization’s 60-year tradition of exceptional care.”

The Cottage’s executive director, Sarah Kaminski, said the new residence – a $800,000 renovation of unused long-term nursing care space – offers a safe, home-like atmosphere, with a staff of 12 trained Certified Dementia Practitioners.

"The Cottage is a 10-room secure residence with shared living areas," she said. "Because there are various stages of dementia, especially within the Alzheimer's spectrum, the care that The Cottage staff offers is centered on residents’ individual needs, including their needs for independence, safety and security."

Kaminski said all programs and services at The Cottage are geared toward maintaining residents’ independence and enhancing their quality of life.

The Cottage promotes independence through a healthy lifestyle and by offering residents choices in their daily routine,” she said. “Residents’ interests and abilities can directly influence how they spend their day, as well as confirm their feeling of having control over their care and experience.”

As the finishing touches are applied and furniture is moved in, Kaminski said she is looking forward to a whole new way of serving residents in an aesthetically pleasing setting.

The Cottage has a landscaped courtyard and a garden where residents will be able to enjoy the outdoors and visit with family, friends, and neighbors,” she said. “Family-style dining and shared kitchen and living areas certainly add to the home-like atmosphere, which instill a sense of belonging and a sense of home.”

The Cottage is now taking applications for residency. Call 614-384-2271 for an application and program and service details, or visit whv.org/the-cottage.

The Cottage and other key growth initiatives are made possible through the generosity of donors to Wexner Heritage Village's Campaign to Revolutionize Care, a five-year $10 million fundraising effort to support current priorities and fortify the future of the organization.
